General Madness
GW: My understanding is that we will be camping on the grass area just north of where we were last year (Willamette Mission State Park). I presume we pay individually as we enter the park? Last year Tom G. reserved an acre or so for us and prepaid for all of us..it was a very nice arrangement....and we had an impressive group.
This is an opportunity for all especially students. This topic is all about freelance writing, we will give some points and reminders on how to be an effective writer. Please check our site for more information and details.

- Who is Brewing

- Systems
- Recipes
- What's on tap
BT: COHO IIPA, New Delhi Monkey Man IPA, Avenger IIPA, Jolly Green Giant Imperial Red, fresh hop pale ale
EC: Schnitzengiggle India Pale Lager
GW: bringing 5 gallons of a hoppy IPA+ and 5 gallons of a lite Sierra NV clone (intended as something easy to drink in a world of hops).
- Beer serving equipment: Club jockey box (2 tap), BT jockey box (4 tap), Ice needed - lots of ice! TB sinle tap jockey box with CO2.
EC: I'll pick up some ice in Salem. If I could put my keg on one of the jockey box taps and get a few hits of C02 to push the beer that would be great.
BE: 2 blocks of ice.
GW: Good idea. Everyone should bring enough ice to keep your things chilled until at least Saturday AM. We can send a designated driver on an ice run Saturday as necessary. There is a convenience store a couple of miles away.
GW: For those going on the hop farm tour, don't forget that it is customary to donate a couple of bottled beers to the farmer (can be home brew or commercial) So you might want to plan to bring along some "extra" beer.
Food
GW: Based on numbers I see posted here as of today 8/24...for those who are offering to bring food, I would suggest that we plan for about 20 folks per meal. If you are bringing food, suggest you indicate what quantity...such as 1 pound, 1 dozen, 1 gross, or enough for 20, etc. If we coordinate, we can share and avoid duplication.
GW: Bret, are you bringing your smoker? When would it arrive? I can fill in some of the blanks on food as soon as I know what equipment we will have by when. I could bring GP's smoker, but it is bulky. (I would prefer not to rent a U-haul as I did last year). We probably would not need two smokers.
BE: Gary if you like you could barrow my trailer since you're going over on Friday. Also, I've slow cooked ribs in my Webber, so that's an option.
GW: Brian...that would be great...I expect I would use it to mostly transport a "rick" or so of firewood...what size is it..covered or not? Send me an email....
GW: Brian..could I pick up your trailer Thursday 9/10 AM? Return to you by Monday or Tuesday 9/15. Let's discuss. I will email you.
BB: I have an electric smoker if anyone wants to borrow it, let me know.
GW: The only electricity available to my knowledge is in the covered building and I don't know how close we will be to that building or if an outlet would be available.
Friday
- Dinner
GW: Looks like it would be easy to do burgers on a small grill as folks roll in for the evening and we get prepared for the big day Saturday. Comments? Probably best if everyone supplies their own burgers or whatever food for Friday evening? ..since folks will be arriving at various times...or does someone what to furnish food for Friday evening?
BT: I plan on grilling up a big batch of Phillipine style green mussels for apps. Butter, garlic, good stuff - everyone should like them. Burgers would be OK. We could get a box of them from Costco.
GW: Mussels ! Wish we could do lumpia and bouillabaisse (I've forgotten the Phillipine name for it) also. Maybe next year...
TimK & TomB will provide dinner for 20 people. Burgers, Dogs, Green Salad, Chips & Salsa and Cookies for Desert. We'll use the grill after BT cooks up his mussels.
GW: Nice. I will bring 24 hot dog buns and 12 burger buns (cheap in the large paks at Cash & Carry) for Friday and/or Saturday.
Saturday
- Breakfast
GW: I will supply fixins' for do-it-yourself Bloody/Virgin Mary bar with your choice of Ms. T's, V-8 juice, fresh celery sticks, celery seed, fresh lemon wedges, tobasco, kosher salt, crushed ice, and freshly ground pepper. Served with grilled ham, egg,and/or cheese on toasted english muffins. Choice of orange juice, ice water, or pale ale (a relaxing Sierra Nevada clone) assuming some is left by then.
EC: Bacon
D: 12 eggs
BB: Cream Cheese Brownies (or alternate dessert... Dessert, it's not just for breakfast anymore)
GW: Wow...really? Sounds like we need an expresso or latte served with it?
BT/MF: We'll bring some coffee (good coffee) and a couple dozen donuts. We could use an extra camping style coffee pot if anybody has one.
EC: We'll bring a couple of presses for making coffee
- Lunch
GW: Probably many hop madness activities will occur about this time of day. We will need a small, slow fire for a few würst, dogs, and/or burgers, continuing through most of the afternoon. Good food and good brews are everywhere as folks "graze" around the park...all day. Walk around, have a good time, grab some food provided by various brew clubs, and sample their beers. The experience reminds me of a local county fair except everything is free, with an emphasis on free beer. I will bring a "smokey Joe" (miniature Weber kettle). This is a "grill" not a BBQ. It is small, portable, and will suffice for cooking afternoon brats/burgers/dogs. I will bring a dozen dogs or so and buns to share, some mustard and relish.
JD: will bring crackers, meats and cheeses to be served at our COHO tent. For all patrons to enjoy with our fine beers!!!
- Dinner...about 7:00pm?
GW: Assuming Bret's smoker shows up...I will provide dry-rubbed chicken for about 25 folks and 40lbs. of mesquite charcoal logs for Memphis style dry BBQ. Probably will be legs & thighs as the breasts tend to dry out too much. Fire must be underway by 1:00pm or so to make this happen.
GW: First-timer to Hop Madness MG has told me he will spend the afternoon preparing his world famous BBQ beans for 20. Bring a can if you want, but it appears that an adequate quantity of beans will be available.
BE: Pasta salad, bread for 20
EC: Potato salad for 10
BT/MF: The smoker is definitely coming over for Hop Madness and will be running on Saturday afternoon. Gary will be working on some chicken, and I will toy with a variety of other meats including spareribs, sausages, maybe some pork butt.
Sunday
GW: For planning purposes, my recollection is that check out time is noon (or pay for another night). I will probably depart about noon Sunday.
- Breakfast
EC: Bacon
BT/MF: Chorizo con eggs, more coffee, perhaps some chocolate chip muffins
- Lunch?
Supplies
- Tables - COHO table ready for transport (6'), BT table ready (4')
GW: COHO tables, etc could probably go over in Brian's trailer with me.
BB: I have two tables I can bring if needed, let me know.
BT: More tables would be good!
- Chairs
GW: Bring lots of lawn chairs.
BT: Everybody on their own here. Bring an extra if you have one just in case...
- BBQ
BE: Weber for Saturday
- Plates, utensils
- Canopies
BT: my canopy accounted for. We could use a couple more. Timmy???
- Fire wood
GW: As of 8/24, my friend GP tells me he can supply wood as last year. Our club had the longest, continuous fire in the forest. We might be space limited, so we might not have quite the wood quantity as last year....and I am not sure about our proximity to a fire pit.
D: Firewood, disc golf basket, boccee, and assorted shanagans
EC: I've got some scraps of wood that I'll bring for the campfire
BB: We will bring a couple bundles of (dry) pine limbs for the fire. We will bring garbage bags, cups and napkins. (Will need someone to bring home what's left.)
GW: Anyone have a badmitton set?
- Snoring
GW:allowed by permit only
BB: I won't need a permit this year as I'll be in a car traveling back on Saturday evening, but I can help check for valid permits before departing
GW: Bill, as you leave, just kick those who are snoring and who do not have a valid snore-park pass pasted on their forehead. This works pretty much like a sno-park pass.
