Quarterly Competitions

The COHO Quarterly Club Competition
Goal:
To encourage club members to learn how to brew to BJCP Style Guidelines; to experience entering BJCP sponsored competitions; to improve member’s overall brewing skills, knowledge and experience; and most importantly to have fun brewing new and different beers.
Competition Guidelines:
- Each quarter’s beer style will be chosen from one of the 28 BJCP Styles ( http://www.bjcp.org/2008styles/catdex.php ) and will include any/all of the beers in that Style. For example, Style 10 American Ale includes 10A American Pale Ale, 10B American Amber Ale, & 10C American Brown Ale
- Competitions are open only to COHO members in good standing
- One entry per member.
- The entry fee of $5 will be used to pay for the prizes and the cost of running the competition.
- 2 – 22oz bottles or 4-12 oz. bottles should be submitted on the Friday before the Sunday competition. You must submit the Entry Form http://www.bjcp.org/docs/BJCP_EntryRecipe.pdf and the Bottle ID form http://www.bjcp.org/docs/BJCP_BottleID.pdf with your entry.
- All COHO brewers, both All Grain and Extract brewers, are encouraged to enter.
- Each Beer will be judged in 2 categories:
- There will be a People’s Choice competition judged by everyone in the club. After all the entries have been judged by the judging panel the beers will be poured for all the club member to taste. Each club member will be given 5 tickets (votes) to vote for their favorite beers. Voting will be anonymous
- A BJCP judged competition with at least 1 Commercial Brewer and 2-4 club members who are judges in training.
BJCP Score Sheets will be used and all entrants will get feedback on their beer. ( http://www.bjcp.org/docs/SCP_BeerScoreSheet.pdf )
Awards:
- 1st, 2nd & 3rd Place Ribbons and one Peoples Choice award will be give at each quarterly competition
- An annual award, “The COHO Brewer of the Year” will be awarded to the Brewer who earns the most points during the 4 quarterly competitions. A 2nd and 3 place award will also be given. These awards will be announced at the Annual Pub Crawl at the end of November 2010.
- Points will be awarded in both the People Choice and the Judged competitions. A first place winner in both categories could get 20 points in the quarterly competition.
- The 10 in each category will be awarded as follows:
- 10 points for 1st place
- 9 points for 2nd place
- 8 points for 3rd place
- 7 points for 4th place
- 6 point for 5th place
- 5 points for 6th place
- 4 points for 7th place
- 3 points for 8th place
- 2 points for 9th place
- 1 point for 10 place
- 10 Bonus Points will be awarded to participants who enter beer or judge in all 4 competitions
Competition Schedule and Style:
Competitions will be held each quarter at the group brews on the 1st Sunday of each quarter, except for November which will be on a Saturday.
The dates for the 2010 competitions are:
1. March 7th - Style 12 a,b,c Porters
2. May 2nd - Style 9-Scottish and Irish Ales

4. Nov 6th - Style 14a,b,c India Pale Ales
* 14A. English IPA * 14B. American IPA * 14C. Imperial IPA
We will brew the selected beer style for the upcoming quarter’s competition at the group brew each quarter. This will give everyone an opportunity to participate in brewing the selected style with other club members; to refine their individual recipes; and to get hints and tips on brewing an award winning beer. We will all have a chance to taste the club brew at the following month’s meeting.
The group brew dates are:
1. Jan 10 – Style 12 a,b,c - Porters
2. March 7 - Style 9a,b,c,d,e - Scottish and Irish Ales
3. June 5 or 6 - Style 10a,b,c - American Ales
4. Sept. 4 or 5 - 14a,b,c - India Pale Ales
